History House Museum


The History House Museum is the place to come for information on the rich history of the West Coast. The museum specialises in pre 1920 records of the area, photos, social comment, living conditions etc.

There are fabulous photos to be viewed (and copied if you wish). The photographic collection covers Greymouth, gold mining, coal mining, timber milling, shipping, living conditions, social history etc.

Research facilities are available. Museum staff can do the research for you or you are welcome to do it yourself. Records include:

  • Indexes transcribed by museum staff.
  • Directories.
  • Pioneer family records.
  • Cemetery records.
  • Some school records and more (many small publications are available)

Weekdays: 10am to 4pm

Some holiday and summer weekends – check with the Information Centre.

Ratepayer Concession.

Paid entry allows free return entry for the following 12 months
